I ceased to be a neutral in June of 2006 when I just happened to be in Germany during the World Cup. If you’ve never seen a nation band together round a group of about 30 men (counting all the players and backroom staff) then you can only imagine the euphoric sense of pride that griped a country not known for its patriotic fervor. I admit I was sucked in. I became the adamant deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft fan that I am today. Those guys (Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Podolski, Ballack, Klose) stole my heart.

I got it back in time to add Portugal to my list of favorite national teams after seeing some of their performances. I’ll admit I got drawn in courtesy of Ronaldo, but I stayed for Deco and Tiago. Yes, the semifinal was somewhat painful to watch, but I was so proud of the Germans I couldn’t shed too many tears for the Portuguese.
I should have been fine with two teams and handful of players, but I insisted on watching the 2010 World Cup from South Africa. It turned out to be a grave mistake. In just one month I managed to open my heart up to four other national teams; South Korea, Argentina, Uruguay, and Spain.
My obsession with national team players from the aforementioned countries spilled over into clubs around Europe, eventually leading me to follow eight teams:
Serie A (Italy)
Liverpool FC (ended up supporting the England national team too thanks to these boys)

I know some of you will look at the lists of club and country teams and say, “wait, you can’t support Germany and England or Barça and Real Madrid.” Well, you might be right, but since I have no home grown loyalties to speak of and am basically just routing for the teams who happen to house my favorite players at the moment I don’t think I can be red carded just yet.
